HOT 109 FM: Do Lyrics Still Matter? An Interview With DTown by Jean Russet

When it comes to hip-hop, lyrics matter. However, this would be a difficult conclusion to arrive at if one were were to look at the top songs on Billboard’s Top Rap Songs Chart today. Desiigner’s “Panda”. Drake’s “Too Good”. I think you get the picture.

Still, if you are a fan of quality and lyrics, you can find a lot of quality stuff out there. You just have to search much harder for it. I’m going to make it easier for you today because I care, and because I know your time is valuable. Get your mobile devices and headphones ready and tune your ears to this artist: DTown.

DTown is an up and coming independent artist that lets his music do the talking. I first heard him spit 16 bars over DJ Khaled’s “I Got The Keys”. Watch him go in here:

I would soon find out that slaying beats was something he does habitually. You see, DTown realizes that there is still a place for lyricism in today’s rap. By taking recent tracks like these, and flexing his lyrical muscles, he is able to state his case for the importance of lyrics and assist in keeping real hip-hop alive as an independent artist. He also shows how you can still sound like yourself over someone else’s beat and remain authentic. This is something rare today, when so many people are trying to sound like the originator of a particular style of hip-hop from the city of Atlanta.

The man is no slouch and has shared the stage with stars like Rick Ross and Wiz Khalifa. Yet, there was something bothering me a little after I visited his website (http://bit.ly/21QaaFJ), and I saw all of the amazing content on there. Why had I not heard of this dude?!

Now, at this point, you may be wondering exactly who this guy is and what he’s all about. Maybe you’re wondering if he really is that good?

I figured you might ask that.

So in order to make it easier for you, and answer all your questions, I tracked him down and interviewed him for you. I have the audio of our discussion enclosed here for your listening enjoyment. Besides his music, you will also get to know more about him as an artist and get an insiders take on what it’s like to be an independent rapper in today’s music landscape. Real hip-hop isn’t dead. It just moved is all!
